While these next few years will be a busy time of Mars missions, it is difficult to say that 1996 will be the most significant year in Martian history. Martian history is marked by a steady increase in the number of probes that have explored the red planet. In January 1961, the Soviet Venera 1 spacecraft became the first spacecraft to land on the Martian surface. By June of the same year, the U.S. Mariner 4 had reached Mars and imaged the Martian atmosphere in stereo and in color. In October 1966, the Soviet Lunik probe reached the surface and began transmitting. In March 1969, the U.S. Viking 1 lander became the first spacecraft to reach the Martian surface. As of May 1996, five more landers have reached the red planet: the U.S. Viking 2, Soviet Vega 1, and U.S. Viking 3, the Soviet Lunik 2, and finally the U.S. Pathfinder. The future of Mars exploration holds more probes, more landers, and more rovers. Mars may yet be the place where humans spread into space.
The year 1996 will be a landmark for Mars exploration. In 1988, Mars had a new face in its sky. In 1996, Mars will have a new face in its sky, and a new face, a new face, a new face, a new face in the sky. On July 4, 1996, Mars will be there as it has never been before. A new face, a new face, a new face, a new face will be there in the sky. On July 4, 1996, Mars will be there as it has never been before. You can call it a day, you can call it a night, you can call it a new day, but the world will be talking about that face in the sky. And on that day, Mars will be there as it has never been before. On that day, Mars will be there as it has never been before. The world will be talking about that face in the sky. And on that day, Mars will be there as it has never been before.
Landing on Mars has been the dream of Mars exploration for decades. The U.S. and Soviet Union have tried repeatedly to reach the Martian surface. The two nations first made contact with the red planet in 1969 with the landing of the American Surveyor 3 spacecraft. Soviets followed with the Soviet Union Mars 1969-1972 series of manned missions. A series of Soviet and U.S. robotic landers reached the Martian surface in 1976. The last of these was the Viking 1 and Viking 2 missions, which landed on Mars in the summer of 1976. The mission was considered a success, but yielded only a few rocks. Viking 1 was driven off the Martian surface by solar wind in 1997. Viking 2 has been preserved at the U.S. Smithsonian Institution.
Four years later, the U.S. launched its two exploration spacecraft, the Pioneer 1 and 2. The probes orbited Mars and returned information about the planet's surface and atmosphere. The two spacecraft are on display at the U.S. Smithsonian Institution. NASA's next attempt to reach the Martian surface occurred in the summer of 1982 with the launch of the Mars Observer and Mars Polar Lander.
