I bought two old road bikes, a Falcon and a North Road Racer for just under $150 each new. They were good bikes for a few years and were very cheap. Now they are languishing in the shed with rust and dirt. My daughter has a Trek, a ZT Krups and an old Raleigh. As for my wife, she rides a cheap Raleigh Canmar. The quality of the frames and components is not good, all kayoed with rust and junk under the seat.
I like the idea of buying used. I wouldn't buy just any bike though. I like bikes. I have ridden countless bikes. I bought a Honda 500 back in the 80's, and I wouldn't ride it these days. Buy a bike that is going to last.
Great article. I was taught these things from my father and my father-in-law, who both bought second hand. It's always better to buy a bike that's in good condition, and to look for some junk on Ebay. It's enough that they're solid, and good to ride. Better buy a quality bike and keep riding it. Maybe you'll want to buy a new bike later.
I used to ride a used Raleigh Daylite 8/10/12 for a couple of years. It's a 50's vintage bike. Very simple design, but great value of manufacture. It was rather a heavy bike but my son learned on an older bike and it was adequate for his needs. He is now learning to ride a more modern bike and it's proving to be a lot more efficient. But, I think it's important to go for a vintage bike, a bike that was built when the best components of the time were available. d2c66b5586
