I was much quieter than Karen, after that. It takes a lot to mess with a linebacker. The school board president called for a hearing to try to stop it from happening again. The parents of the girls were trying to get Karen to talk to the press, but that didn't do much. It seemed every other day, the story was in the papers or on the internet. People were furious. A week before the hearing, Karen's parents were at the hearings. Karen couldn't really talk, but they spoke for her. A lot of the congressmen were talking to the parents of the other girls. People were all telling the board that there had to be a zero-tolerance policy on what happened. It didn't get zero-tolerance. The board voted not to do anything. Karen's family didn't seem to care. They seemed to be taking it as an honor. We were black. She was white. She had two boys that were black. They had no real sense of entitlement, so they were never too torn up about it. Before the girls were forced into the witness protection program, I was the one who looked at the program and said it wasn't for Karen, or the boys. I was the one who looked at the boys and said they might be able to handle it. But there was no hearing for me. After all, I was white. I wasn't a teacher. I was a coach. I couldn't be a class representative. I hadn't even lived in the same county for 20 years. There was no hearing for me.
