Dragon Age: Origins takes place in the fantasy land of Ferelden, a land divided between two kingdoms: the duchy of Orlais and the duchy of Fenris. Played from the perspective of its duchess Aline, the player makes choices that shape the story, the characters, and the end gameplay experience. The story begins during the civil war between the royal empires of Orlais and Fenris when a young duchess of Orlais, Aline, is forced into a marriage with a foreign prince of Fenris for political reasons. While en route to the ceremony, Aline notices a dragon flying overhead. A baby was being dragged from the creature's back by two winged masked men. When Aline's carriage crashes, the player becomes a prisoner of war, and is forced to fight her way out of this situation. As she does so, Aline is given a special gift in the form of a talisman that will later be used to confront the Dragon Knight, a mysterious being. Aline gradually discovers the origins of the civil war, which is revealed to have been instigated by the Dragon Knight, who wishes to destroy Fenris and Orlais for unknown reasons. All attempts to prevent his plans have failed, and Aline is to restore order and peace between the nations before the Dragon Knight can fulfill his destiny. At the end of the game, the Dragon Knight is defeated, and Fenris and Orlais have rebuilt their fallen kingdoms.

Only the first half of the game is playable; the remainder is reserved for optional side quests to complete the story. The player starts the story with three characters to choose from, and may recruit many more to his or her party as the game progresses. Both the character creation and party management systems were based on those found in the recent Baldur's Gate REVOX titles, although the character creation options of both games are slightly different. A character can be male or female, and has four different body types that affect character stats: Wood Elf, human, dwarf, and elf. Various appearance options are available that are similar to those previously seen in Neverwinter Nights. Many of these options are cosmetic, and do not determine a character's alignment.
