Before Shay's execution, the Assassin Lina queues up a letter to her husband, Ezio. She writes about the possibility of her joining Ezio in the US a year later, and assures her husband she will love him and the couple's children no matter their geographical location. Ezio will spend the next fourteen years attempting to follow Lina around the world but his commitment to the Assassins ends when he stops Shay's execution. Lina will finally join her husband in 1787, when he is successful in assassinating Caesar and the family returns to Giappone.
Soon after Ezio's return, Livia joined him. Between them, Ezio and Livia, assisted by Paola, had two sons and a daughter. Paola died in 1785, and Livia was then followed by Aloise in 1786 and finally Monterroso in 1787, shortly before Ezio's death. The children of Ezio and Livia did not take over the assassin's mantle, but in 1807 Livia's son-in-law, Piero, and his wife Anna took over the role of Assassin.
Sarah's father, Richard, presides over the end of the Jacobins, and witnesses the execution of King Louis XVI. When he returns to England, Richard becomes a face in the crowd, attempting to forget Frederick and the Revolution.
From the time of his return, Richard travels between London and Venice, traveling through Austria, Sicily and Malta. When his daughter Sarah was born, Richard abandoned his name and adopted the name "of Shay". For fifteen years, he pursues a mission of vengeance, and occasionally sees his wife and son through the window of his home. At the peak of his mission, he has an encounter with Ugo, the Assassin-destroyer and Assassin-general.
